Equipment Operator/Mechanic
VELCO is seeking an equipment operator/mechanic. Applicants must have the ability, experience and background to operate, repair and maintain large heavy equipment.
Primary Purpose
Working with or without supervision, and in accordance with established operating and safety practices, this position requires the ability to operate heavy equipment in the daily construction, installation and maintenance activities on electrical transmission facilities ranging from 34.5 kV AC to 450 kV DC. This position also requires the ability to repair and maintain aerial devices along with other large equipment in the fleet. Work (routinely performed where there is exposure to inclement weather – heat/cold) requires scheduled and unscheduled overtime and incumbent will be requested to respond and assist line workers with emergency calls regarding line maintenance/service restoration.
Responsibilities
1. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of VELCO safety rules & practices (including but not limited to vehicles, tools, line workers or other personnel)
2. Assist in Inspection, installation, repair or replace all components of transmission systems, under supervision, and as a part of a team
3. Operate and use heavy equipment (track buckets, track derrick, excavator, bulldozer, backhoe, etc.) May dig and anchor holes and assist in setting, removing, and loading, unloading, transporting and framing poles.
4. Operate commercial vehicles, including Tractor Trailer units.
5. Assist line workers with emergency maintenance and restoration of electrical facilities.
6. Have complete knowledge of operating, maintaining and repairing VELCO’s heavy equipment with a strong emphasis on hydraulics.
7. Maintain maintenance records of all heavy equipment as well as establishing scheduled maintenance per manufactures recommendations.
8. Maintain schedules for all insulated boom testing and requirements.
9. Perform periodic equipment checks and routine maintenance procedures on assigned equipment.
10. Communicate information relative to scheduling and related requirements to Supervisor to achieve maximum production, efficient operation, and the timely completion of work.
11. Perform routine repairs as time allows on light duty pickups, trailers, ATV’s, UTV’s associated with line crew equipment as well as all company cranes and aerial devices.
12. Serve and satisfy internal customers and be a strong customer service advocate for the company.
13. Assist Fleet Manager with the specifications of new and replacement vehicles and equipment.
14. Render assistance as needed during emergency restoration operations, to other utilities, within the boundaries of training, experience and safe work practices.
15. Have experience and knowledge of tools routinely used in the maintenance of vehicles and equipment. Ownership of appropriate tools is preferred.
16. Perform other duties as assigned.
Education, Training and Experience
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Must have a minimum of five (5) years mechanical experience. Must possess a valid CDL driver’s license (or the ability to obtain one), have the required qualifications to drive a Department of Transportation (DOT) regulated vehicle and comply with all applicable State and Federal laws.
Demonstrated technical proficiency in the techniques, procedures, use of materials (equipment and tools) along with methods employed in the maintenance and repair of fleet equipment is essential. Keep current with all certifications required to maintain and repair fleet equipment. Demonstrated knowledge of hazardous material handling requirements and environmental regulations related to the maintenance and repair of vehicles.
Physical/Mental Demands
Must be physically able to lift 50 pounds. Work is routinely performed where there is exposure to inclement weather (heat/cold) and requires scheduled and unscheduled overtime. Must live within a reasonable distance of assigned headquarters for daily travel or occasional emergency response purposes. Must be able to travel, with frequent overnight stays, including occasional out of state assignments to assist other utilities.
